What's new in this release
Wireless Data Server 3.0 Beta offers support for Instant Messaging, fully configurable output formats, delivery of non-calendar content, and SNMP monitoring. See the Wireless Data Server Administrator's Guide for details.
Instant Messaging
Through the Jabber Instant Messaging server, Wireless Data Server can now deliver reminders and notifications directly to users' Instant Messaging clients. Wireless Data Server can detect when users are on-line and off-line, and route messages intelligently to their IM clients and wireless devices accordingly.
Configurable output formats
Use Wireless Data Server's XSL stylesheets to configure your reminders and notifications exactly the way you want them, for both Instant Messaging and plain-text SMS delivery.
Non-calendar content
Wireless Data Server can accept and deliver content in XML and plain-text formats from any source, format the content according to specified stylesheets, and deliver the final message via Instant Messaging and SMS.
SNMP monitoring
Wireless Data Server now offers the ability to monitor server statistics and other information through the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
Limitation, caveats, and known problems with this release
HP-UX file descriptors
Due to a limitation in the HP-UX 10.20 operating system, Wireless Data Server cannot set the maximum number of file descriptors. Ensure that this number is set to the maximum (at least 1024).
Solaris platforms and Nokia 7110
Due to a buffer size limitation on Solaris platforms, Wireless Data Server must run in text mode when used with the Data Circuit-terminating Equipment (DCE) plug-in. If you use a modem to connect to the wireless network, change the value of the
[<DCE>]smsmodeparameter in/etc/config/wds.inito1, and change the value of the[WDS]smsccharsetparameter toMSCP437. For more details on these parameters, consult Chapter 2 of the Wireless Data Server Administrator's Guide. The effect of this change is that users with Nokia 7110 phones will be unable to send calendar notes to Wireless Data Server. All plain-text messages will work correctly, and users with 7110 phones will receive all notifications and reminders correctly.
